Abstract:
Groundworks to the rear of Quayside were subject of archaeological monitoring, prior to the construction of a single-storey extension - conservatory. The monitoring was undertaken as a part of a condition placed on planning consent by Maldon District Council (MAL/00624/11 and MAL/00625/11) on the advice of the Essex County Council Historic Environment Management Team (ECC FAU). The residential property known as Quayside is a Grade II Listed 18th century building, located within the historic core of Burnham. The medieval town appears to have been largely a fishing port, with licences granted for the use of fish weirs and oyster dredging, and there would presumably have been structures along the quay linked to this trade. Due to the limited space and the existing service pipe, the extension footprint, measuring 6m by 2.5m by 0.3m deep, was excavated by hand (Plate 1 and 2). The exposed stratigraphy showed that the backyard slab stones were laid on 0.2m thick layer of rubble, which was placed directly on dark, organic soil, presumably former topsoil. The depth required for the purposes of the construction turned out not to be sufficient to expose any archaeological features or artefacts, that may be present at this location. The results of the monitoring suggest that the proposed development will not have any impact upon the archaeological record.
