Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was conducted by NAU Archaeology on behalf of Trundley Design Services Ltd for Chalcroft Ltd in February 2011 ahead of an application for planning permission to build an agricultural complex. Twelve trial trenches were excavated designed to sample 5% of the development area. Several archaeological features were found during the fieldwork, the majority of which were located in the southern part of the site. These consisted of two field boundaries in Trenches 1 and 3 and a large probably natural hollow in Trench 4 which contained a substantial amount of medieval pot sherds. An small pit was also located within Trench 1. A small post-hole in Trench 8 was the most interesting feature as it contained several sherds of Beaker period (Bronze Age) pottery and was sealed by subsoil. It may be associated with Bronze Age barrows situated to the north and east of the development site; such features are frequently a focus for other activity in the same period and later. Two other irregular pits (perhaps prehistoric in date or possibly natural features) and an undated gully were present within the evaluated area. |
