Abstract:
A building survey was carried ouy on 17th September 2005 by North Pennines Archaeology of a barn located on land adjacent to Sycamore House, Blencarn, Penrith. This was carried out prior to the proposed demolition and reconstruction of the barn as part of a housing development. The barn is first shown on mapping of 1850, on the tithe map of that year, although it may also have been depicted on Hodskinson and Donald's plan of 1774 (surveyed in 1770). The date above the door on the barn is a crude '1763' which may or may not be original. The survey showed that this date fits in with a period of rebuilding at the site. The associated cart shed appears to date to between 1865 and 1900.
