Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation consisting of four trenches was carried out in early March by Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd at 8-40 Chatfield Road, Battersea in the London Borough of Wandsworth. The only archaeological remains observed were two postholes and a segment of north-south aligned brick wall all dating to the late 19th century. However, artefactual evidence in form of residual pottery sherds suggested that the area had experienced at least ephemeral activity from as early as the mid- late 16th century. By the end of the 19th century the site was occupied by terraced houses fronting Chatfield Road. These were demolished in the 1970s to make way for the light-industrial units that occupied the site until early 2013.
