Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Terence O'Rourke Ltd on behalf of Alectron Investments Ltd (the Client), to undertake an archaeological evaluation at land to the west of Cantelupe Road, Haslingfield, Cambridgeshire, centred on National Grid Reference (NGR) 541405 253805. The proposed scheme will entail the construction of a solar farm, application number S/0154/11. The site comprises of two fields of agricultural land with a combined area of 13.23 hectares. A total of 41 trenches comprising 3% sample of the Site area were excavated with the trenches positioned on the proposed locations of the solar panels. The work was carried out between the 12th and 20th April 2012. Archaeological features were found within only ten of the trenches, and included late prehistoric and undated ditches. A number of tree throw holes were also recorded, particularly in the northernmost field, and are likely to be associated with the orchard which occupied the field from the early 1900s. Two separate areas of modern disturbance were noted. An area within the southernmost field appears to be related to quarrying, whilst a large area on the eastern edge of the northern field is related to dumped material from the construction of three reservoirs in the 1970s to the immediate east of the site. Due to the negative results of the evaluation it is unlikely that any further additional archaeological investigation will be needed.
