Abstract: |
A desktop assessment was carried out on the site of the former GPL Coal Depot on Southgate, Pickering by Archaeological Services in July 2008. The site lies just outside the medieval centre of settlement, but is low-lying and next to a river. This will have inhibited early occupation. A building, probably a mill, is present on the 1839 tithe plan. This may be the same as the bone mill shown on the 1st ed. OS map (although the location varies slightly and would imply the tithe map was inaccurate). The railway was constructed in the 1840s, forming the eastern boundary of the site, and two coal depots (later merged into one) were built soon after. The mill (corn mill on later OS editions) and most structures within ther coal depots were demolished in the 1970s. |
