Abstract:
In March 2014 Archaeological Research Services Ltd. was commissioned by Ian Howarth to undertake an archaeological watching brief at The Queen's Head Hotel, Buxton, Derbyshire. The scheme of works was related to the proposed construction of a two-storey rear extension comprising six hotel bedrooms and a car port, located on the site of a demolished stable building. The archaeological watching brief monitored all ground works carried out as part of the building extension, comprising the excavation of one foundation plot and two service trenches. The archaeological watching brief identified the foundations of a number of walls along with partial flagged stone and cobbled surfaces, and nineteenth and twentieth century pottery and clay pipe fragments. The structural remains encountered, along with the cultural material, indicate that the remains may be related to a stable structure that is known to have existed in the location, until it was demolished in the 1970's. The date of construction for this building is not documented, although the pottery and clay pipe recovered from the foundation cut of these walls suggest that it was constructed in the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century.
