Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Salt Evans Architects on behalf of Kanbi and Sons Ltd to carry out a programme of historic building recording in advance of demolition works at 199 Upton Lane, Forest Gate, E7 centred at NGR 540398/184452. This work included a photographic record of each building, including their wider setting, plus documentary research to establish the chronological development of the site with a view to tracing the history, evolution and function of the buildings from their conception to the present day. The main structure was built as a Methodist chapel in 1892 and continued as such (with extensions) until the 1940's. From then until the late 20th century it was adapted to operate firstly as a textiles factory and more recently a glass and timber merchants. Internally, the buildings have been subject to various alterations in response to change in use and demand. The building group comprises three main structures; the Main Worship Space, a Single Storey Link Building and an adjacent Hall. In addition, two later single storey lean-tos are attached to the north and south sides of the Main Worship Space. Following demolition of the extant buildings, an evaluation comprised machine excavation of a single trial trench prior to construction of a new building with an underground parking. The features and deposits encountered are remnants of works associated with the construction of the demolished Methodist chapel. Buried topsoil, recorded in a small area in the north-west corner of the trench, was possibly associated with fields mapped in the 19th century. The evaluation demonstrated there is little potential for the presence and survival of archaeological features on site.
