Abstract:
AOC Archaeology Group was commissioned by Susan Stephen Architects on behalf of their client to undertake an archaeological watching brief over the ground breaking work associated with the construction of a single house at 40 Barnton Avenue, Edinburgh. Prior to the start of development a large excavation area, approximately 1.5m in depth, occupied a substantial proportion of the site. Upon cleaning it was clear that a number of archaeological features were present in the west facing section of the trench Two structural phases were identified, the later structure comprising two lime mortar bonded sandstone walls with a brick and sandstone slab floor and associated culvert. Underlying one of the mortar bonded walls was an earlier clay bonded sandstone wall on a differing alignment. Isolated from but possibly related to this earlier wall was a sandstone slab hearth with in-situ ash deposit. These structures were recorded in section but as the current phase of work would not impact upon them no further excavations were conducted. No features or artefacts were revealed during the ground breaking works associated with the construction of the house. Jamie Humble (AOC Archaeology Group) 2013.
