Abstract: |
An archaeological excavation targeted on remains revealed in a preceding evaluation on land south of no. 94 South Street, Tillingham, Essex. The most significant remains comprise a rectilinear ditched enclosure fronting South Street. Investigation of the enclosure ditch and associated pits and gullies support the presence of medieval settlement at this location from as early as the 10th to 11th centuries. The presence of a dwelling could not be confirmed as structural remains within the enclosure were not identified. Nevertheless, the domestic nature of finds such as blackened cooking-pots and fragments of quern stone strongly suggests settlement activity. |
