Abstract:
In 2015 Cornwall Archaeological Unit (CAU) carried out an archaeological and historical study of the lane to Roundwood Quay on the Fal Estuary, west Cornwall, for Cormac, Cornwall Council (CC). The study was required by Historic England (HE) as a condition of Scheduled Monument Consent (SMC) for Cormac's roadworks to the east part of the route, near the quay, this running through a prehistoric promontory fort at Roundwood within which is a further oval fort or round. The roadworks at Roundwood involved delivering, spreading and rolling some 300 tons of material to re-surface the historic metalling of the lane, and digging a drainage ditch in two places beside this. The archaeological project aimed to prevent associated inadvertent damage to the prehistoric earthworks, ensure avoidance or recording of any archaeological remains encountered, as appropriate, and increase understanding of the development and archaeological significance and potential of Roundwood. Methods used included desk-top study of historic maps and other documentary sources; fieldwork combining photography, description and profile drawing in advance of the roadworks; watching brief and monitoring during the works at Roundwood; and further assessment. (Following the roadworks affecting the Roundwood part, approximately 225m long, others took place along the remainder of the route to the tarmac road near Tregew, some 730m west; these were not monitored.)
