Traces the origins of the style back to motifs found in late Roman art, and differentiates four phases within Style I itself. A group of brooches which includes Finglesham D3 is identified as originating in Jutland (not in Kent), with its earliest examples dated 480-500. Also considered are the quoit-brooch and Nydam styles, the first seen as sub-Roman, the second as successor to the late Roman chip-carved bronzes c 400-475.

Uses geographical methods (hexagonal grids, probability matrix etc) to study forts and symbol stones of classes I, II and III. The monuments are also studied in relation to the enviromnent and to pit place-names.

SX 224974. Excavations revealed substantial remains of a fine manor house within an earlier ringwork. The stone house showed four building phases in late 12th and early 13th centuries, and was abandoned and gradually demolished in mid-14th. There was no visible trace of the hall belonging to the ringwork, but the late 12th-century camera had certainly been associated with a hall of earlier date. The manor buildings, disposed on four sides of a courtyard, comprised hall, camera, chapel, service rooms, lodgings and a gatehouse; a counter-balanced drawbridge of 13th century was also attested. Pottery and small finds are catalogued.

These tapering bronze tubes are much more suitable for cosmetic brushes than for needle cases: one example contains the remains of a brush, another is associated with toilet articles.

C 865405 approx. A boat-burial in Ballywillin Bog was recorded in 1813 and described as a 40-50 ton ship in a mound of stones and turf, it could well have been of Viking date.

Including review-article of 'The Anglo-Saxon cemeteries of Caistor-by-Norwich and Markshall, Norfolk.' Though Myres has correctly identified Caistor, by its abnormally high proportion of very early burials, as one of the few undoubted sites of the incoming English, he has not proved that it predates the 420s. Scrutiny of his Continental comparanda is hindered by lack of illustrations, and some "parallels" are illusory or undatable, and in general he pays little regard to the durability of Plettke's chronology. Moreover, unless pots, military equipment and cemeteries are all found in direct association they cannot legitimately be used as assemblages.
