Owls in the Basilica
Barbara West
Gustav Milne
31 - 35
During the Leadenhall Court excavations, an owl pellet was discovered in the Roman basilica (see also 94/460). The article discusses the possible events which led to the deposit of the cluster of mole and vole bones and demonstrates how careful retrieval of environmental samples has provided further information of the environmental and economic development of Roman London.
The Globe and the Fortune -- a synthesis
Grenville Cuyler
36 - 39
A discussion of the possible dimensions of the Globe theatre, in which the author relates J Orrell's findings (see 92/1708) to information provided in the Fortune Playhouse building contract.
The distribution of villas in Kent, Surrey and Sussex: some preliminary findings from a survey
Harvey L Sheldon
Gerry Corti
Don Green
Paul A Tyers
40 - 46
The distribution of the mapped villas has revealed their association with inland and coastal waterways and road systems, thus suggesting a trading network. The article also surmises that the spread of villas necessitated good landward communications. The function of those villas near roads is questioned and that soil type influences the siting of villas is observed.
