Abstract: |
Excavation at the Charles Street, Sheffield, site was required as a condition of planning consent for redevelopment of the site. Fieldwork comprised the machine stripping and recording of the north eastern half of the development site, which had been shown by previous evaluation to have preserved archaeological deposits. The mitigation works revealed good survival of archaeological features and deposits associated with 19th- to 20th-century activity. Cellars, yard deposits, walls and a large machine base associated with industrial works and some domestic housing were exposed. No evidence for furnaces or industrial processes were found. The remains are considered to be of local archaeological significance. |
