Abstract:
An archaeological trial trench evaluation was carried out by University of Leicester Archaeological Services (ULAS) on two sites at Uppingham School, Uppingham, Rutland (SP 86528 99943 and SP 86571 99774). The work was in advance of the proposed development of the areas for a car park and an extension to an existing workshop, housed inside a former Grade II listed barn. Area A at Meadhurst lies just outside the historic core of the town and Area B at The Thring Centre lies within it. Previous archaeological investigations in the vicinity of Uppingham have uncovered extensive prehistoric Roman, Anglo-Saxon, medieval and post-medieval remains. The site at Area B contains a Grade II listed barn and boundary wall and early maps of the site show a building within the area to be extended into. Three trenches were placed within the proposed development areas. One within a car park, one in a playing field and another in a garden alongside a large shed. All three trenches were negative for archaeological features. The archive for the work will be deposited with Rutland County Museum with the accession number OAKRM: 2016.18.
