Abstract: |
This report documents the results of an archaeological evaluation on the site of the former bus depot, car park and garage at 16 North Street, Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, LU7 1EN (NGR SP 9223 2517). The work was commissioned by CgMs Consulting on behalf of McCarthy and Stone Retirement Lifestyle Limited in response to a condition placed upon development of the site by the Central Bedfordshire Council. Two 15m, one 30m and one 40m long trenches were machine excavated and contained modern services, modern pits and foundations. A 20m by 10m area was subsequently machine excavated in the southern area of the site, exposing a series of Saxo-Norman to early medieval ditches and pits. The ditches appear to mark land divisions or boundary plots whilst the pits are likely to relate to refuse disposal associated with the early medieval settlement. |
