Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology (WA) was commissioned by Arc Homes (hereafter the 'Client') to undertake an archaeological evaluation on land at Montacute Road, East Stoke, near Stoke-sub-Hamdon, Somerset centred on National Grid Reference (NGR) ST 48800 17475. The evaluation took place between the 26th and 27th May 2015. Outline planning permission (planning ref. 13/03622/FUL) was granted for the construction of 18 dwellings and associated works including a new vehicular access, parking, open space and landscaping by South Somerset District Council (SSDC). South West Heritage Trust (SWHT), archaeological advisors to SSDC, requested that a programme of archaeological evaluation be undertaken in order to supply sufficient information regarding potential buried archaeological remains. A total of six trenches were excavated within the footprint of the proposed development. No archaeological features were revealed, although several modern ditches associated with a fruit farm on the site were recorded.
