Abstract: |
Archaeological monitoring and recording took place during the construction of a new school just off Rushcliffe Road, in Grantham. The development site was within the grounds of the current school, Priory Ruskin Academy (formerly the College of Central Technology and Sports) the majority of which was demolished as part of the project. The site is located c. 800m north of the town centre, and 150m west of the A607, Manthorpe Road and is accessed via Rushcliffe Road within the Manthorpe residential estate. The site is centered on NGR: SK 912 371. Archaeological work associated with the construction of the original school buildings, during the 1970s uncovered archaeological remains dating to Anglo-Saxon period, which included a possible human burial. Whilst settlement activity dating to the Roman period was identified, in the southern half of the development site, during the evaluation phase of this current scheme which was undertaken in 2011. Despite the archaeology that had previously been exposed on site, no archaeological features were exposed during the monitoring of groundwork. |
