Abstract:
The trial trenching demonstrated that a complex of enclosures identified by geophysical survey in the Eastern Arm, on the north bank of the Clipstone Brook, represented an enclosed rural settlement of the late Iron Age and Roman periods. Remains were generally well preserved beneath a deep layer of overburden. The sample excavation produced a significant artefact assemblage and demonstrated the potential for the recovery of ecofactual evidence. Other evidence of activity in the Roman period consisted of a single ditch which contained pottery and animal bone. Other features found across the study area consisted of furrows and earthworks formed by medieval strip cultivation and a number of narrow ditches. These ditches contained few dateable artefacts and no relationships to the furrows could be determined. However, in plan, they appeared to respect the pattern of the medieval field system, with the ditches running parallel to furrows or along headlands. One possible enclosure formed by these ditches lied on the same axis as adjacent furrows. [Au(abr)]
