Abstract: |
North Pennines Archaeology Ltd were commissioned to carry out a RCHME Level 2 building survey on a single-storey brick-built barn at Thorncliffe, Chertsey Mount, Carlisle. The survey found the building dated to the mid 19th century and was unrelated to a previous structure shown on the 1847 Tithe map. The barn appears to have been a stable block for the attached inn, with accommodation above for staff. A small smithy may also have been present. It is currently used as a workshop and garage which has resulted in numerous alterations to the original fabric of the building. |
