Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during the removal of a modern cement floor at the Grade I Listed St Peter's Church, South Somercotes. Several undated layers, interpreted as possible floor surfaces, were revealed. Foundation trenches for the standing 15th century nave walls were also recorded. The remains of two substantial east-west walls, on the same alignment as the north and south arcade piers, were the earliest features encountered. Finds encountered included several fragments of unstratified pottery that were dated to the 13th-14th centuries. A single piece of human skull was also observed during the investigation but not removed. [Au] |
