Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of an extension to a church. The earliest surviving datable fabric of the church was of late 13th century date, although the unusually smal size of its existing nave may have reflected the outline of the original, 11th century church. Due to limits placed upon the depth of excavation, the evaluation trench extended to only 0.75m below the modern surface. No features or deposits associated with burials or earlier builds of the church were revealed. The features identified mainly comprised services, which may have remained in use. The terminus of a brick wall was also noted. No artefacts were recovered from the trench. It was concluded that if ground disturbances associated with the proposed extensions were limited to a depth of no more than 0.75m below the ground surface, further archaeological fieldwork would probably not be worthwhile. However, it was noted that significant archaeological deposits or features could possibly be found at a greater depth, and that the depth of disturbance during construction should be strictly limited accordingly.
