Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a residential development. A small quantity of prehistoric flint waste flakes with associated bunt material had been recorded in the vicinity of the site. During the evaluation, four trenches were excavated in order to investigate anomalies identified during an earlier gradiometer survey. Archaeological features, two of which corresponded with geophysical anomalies, were revealed within one of the trenches. They comprised two linear gullies, a scoop with a possible post-hole at its base, and a shallow pit. A struck flint flake was recovered from one of the gullies, dating its fill to the prehistoric period. The similarity of all four of the features in terms of form, fill and preservation may have suggested that they were contemporary. It was conclued that further fieldwork could be necessary in order to establish the extent of prehistoric activity within the proposal area. [AIP]
