Abstract:
Salvage recording was carried out within the northern arm of the moat and within the south tower at Stokesay Castle. The work within the moat became necessary when a brick-lined circular feature was revealed after its timber cover, which had been sealed by an accumulation of topsoil, gave way. A trial pit was opened around this feature, and it was found to have been a soakaway of fairly recent date, constructed to aid drainage from the moat. The topsoil contained late 19th century and recent pottery. It was recommended that the soakaway should be made safe by the provision of an appropriate drain cover, as it probably still retained a useful function and was structurally sound. The second piece of recording work, carried out within the undercroft of the south tower, was necessitated by the collapsing of material from a chimney into the fireplace below. This was attributed to the failure of the lath-and-plaster blocking of the chimney, which had partially collapsed under the weight of accumulated soot and debris. It was suggested that the part of the blocking which remained in situ required either repair or complete removal. The quantity of material within the fireplace suggested that the chimney lining was also in need of repair. [AIP]
