Abstract:
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of foundation trenches for a new garage and the excavation of a sump, at a site which lay within the Scheduled area of an Iron Age hillfort. The area of greatest archaeological potential lay at the eastern side of the development, where the foundation trench most obviously cut into the tail of the outer bank. However, a lack of finds left the dating of two key layers in doubt. One layer could have represented the degraded remains of the Iron Age bank, although it could equally well have been a more recent layer of re-deposited natural. A second layer, which contained a high concentration of tree roots, could have been a compressed turf line, but its lack of compactness and the presence of the roots suggested that it was a more recently buried layer of topsoil. No trace of a ditch was observed at the foot of the inner bank. [AIP]
