Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out at a proposed development site, following the identification of six zones of potential surviving archaeological remains in a desk-based assessment. The trial trenching confirmed the results of the assessment. Archaeological deposits, interpreted as medieval cultivation soils, were recorded within two of the zones, whilst Zone 4 was shown to have represented the extent of a former Non-Conformist burial ground. A number of grave cuts were identified, and whole and fragmentary memorial stones were found. A sherd of 13th-14th century pottery, four post-medieval sherds, a copper alloy buckle, a piece of moulded stone and fragments of clay pipe, metalworking slag, tile, glass and animal bone were recovered.
