Abstract:
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of engineers' test-pits in aadvance of a proposed housing development at the site of Witton Hall, which had been built in 1730 and was to be converted as part of the development. A desk-based assessment had suggested that a medieval manor house had existed at Witton, on or close to the development site, and that a two-storey building depicted on a map of 1725 may also have lain on the site. Ponds had existed in the western and southern parts of the proposal area in the 19th century, and buildings of 18th and 19th century date had lain in the eastern part, where 20th century buildings were presently situated. An evaluation had identified cobbled surfaces and brick drains which were probably associated with the early occupation of Witton Hall, infilled ponds, a sherd of medieval pottery and a group of ditches and pits, one of which had produced a radiocarbon date of c. 5000 Cal. BC. During the watching brief, evidence of post-medieval activity was observed which had probably been associated with the primary occupation of the 18th century hall. A buried horizon and a remnant wall suggested more extensive usage, associated with the hall, than was presently understood. [AIP]
