Abstract: |
In January 2014 Compass Archaeology conducted a watching brief at 49 Bridgen Road in Bexley on the site of a former Victorian Lodge building during redevelopment of the site. The watching brief was successful in that it revealed the footprint of the Lodge house to Bridgen Place within the area of redevelopment, (between 19.90mOD in the northwest corner and 19.39mOD in the southeast corner), and was able to be recorded before it was lost. Details of the Lodge's floor plan can be inferred, as can the method of construction along with overall dimensions. These equate well with available cartographic sources, especially a 1932 drainage plan. No earlier archaeological deposits were exposed during the watching brief, which is unsurprising considering the lack of development prior to the Lodge being built. Natural geology was revealed at a relatively shallow depth, (19.50mOD or 800mm below ground level in the southwest corner). |
