Abstract: |
Archaeological monitoring took place during installation of new pipework and valves alongside an existing water main - overall area c 9m x 3 m x 1.1m deep. There were no significant finds: in section to the NE (immediately beyond the existing mains trench) natural silty gravel was exposed at about 0.9m below road surface, overlain by c 300mm of compact mid-dark brown silty material and then disturbed/made ground and road make-up. Elsewhere the area had been wholly truncated in the later 19th - earlier 20th century, with a series of made ground layers under the road/pavement base and extending below and beyond the present limits of excavation. It's not clear what this represents, although the 1894-96 OS records a brick field here. The made ground produces 3 sherds of white earthenware, 2 sherds of horticultural ware (flowerpot) and one piece of glazed drain or sewer pipe. |
