Abstract: |
An archaeological monitoring and recording exercise was conducted in association with the redevelopment of the former Swan Hunter shipyard and adjacent land on the north bank of the River Tyne in Wallsend, North Tyneside, Tyne and Wear. The archaeological work identified three phases of activity (Phases 1-3). Phase 1 comprises a 19th-century brick structure, industrial ballast material and subsequent levelling and consolidation deposits associated with the reclamation of the foreshore and narrowing of the river channel. Phase 2 represents early 20th-century industrial era activity including ground levelling and consolidation deposits and part of a railway track. Phase 3 represents 20th-century and modern era activity. |
