Abstract:
Nineteen test pits and trenches were excavated to investigate the sub-surface survival of the remains of the Crystal Palace and features on the surrounding terraces to provide information to support an environmental impact assessment. Natural clay was observed in a number of locations. Within the highest (western) part of the site, brick walls and other structural features were found to survive well. Some debris from the 1936 fire which destroyed the building was also observed. On the lower terrace the steps and fountains had largely been demolished during past re-landscaping projects.
