The excavation of a barrow at Woodhouse End, Gawsworth, near Macclesfield
Gordon Rowley
1 - 34
SJ 914695. This was a Beaker monument with a primary central deposit in a pit. The wide low mound was formed in three separate phases and covered a firepit, a channel and an oval pit, all of unknown use. Five satellite cremations were in the SW quadrant. A large number of Mortlake sherds in the mound material probably represented pre-barrow occupation. The Beaker is of Clarke S2 type; there were also two undecorated Collared Urns, an accessory cup, a 'mouth bellows' and clay ear-stud. Skeletal material is analysed.

Mirrors in Roman Chester
Glenys Lloyd-Morgan
49 - 55
The Chester collection spans much of the Roman period and is remarkable for its number and variety of mirrors, fifteen of which are catalogued and discussed together with four representations of mirrors. Both Italian and northern provincial workshops are represented; the implications are that Chester was wealthy and had strong trade contacts. See also author's Roman mirrors in Britain, in Curr Archaeol, 5, 1977, 329-31.
