I: Excavations at Church Moss, Davenham 1995–6: a post-glacial environmental sequence in mid-Cheshire
Katharine M Buxton
Christine L E Howard-Davis
1 - 17
Excavations prompted by the construction of a by-pass revealed a palaeoenvironmental sequence of national significance, recording the local climatic and environmental succession since the last Ice Age. This report presents a summary of both the depositional sequence and the detailed palaeoenvironmental analysis, which was completed in early 1999.
II: The Romans and Ireland again: some thoughts on Tacitus’ Agricola chapter 24
D J Robinson
19 - 31
Re-interprets Tacitus account of the fifth season of Agricola's British campaigns, suggesting that it refers to an exploratory invasion of Ireland, possibly mounted from Chester.
III: Chester: the evidence of Roman coin loss
David C A Shotter
33 - 50
Argues, from the large sample of Roman coins from Chester, for the possibility of a pre-Flavian base in the area for sea-borne operations against the coasts of north Wales and north-west England. Full legionary occupation may have been delayed until the evacuation of Scotland c AD 87. Subsequent occupation reflected changes in frontier policy. A sharp decline in coin loss after 350 poses serious questions regarding the nature and status of Chester.
IV: Middlewich: the evidence of Roman coin loss
David C A Shotter
51 - 60
Property developments in the Middlewich area have recently led to the accumulation of a substantial collection of Roman coins. These are used in this paper to argue for, inter alia, pre- and early Flavian occupation and the presence of a legionary garrison.
V: The Tatton Park project, part 2: the medieval estates, settlements and halls
Nicholas J Higham
61 - 133
A second report on archaeological investigations and research undertaken within the eighteenth-century park. This paper includes a topographical survey of the estate, parish, lordship and landscape of Tatton c 1000---1400, including data from the excavation of the village site and an archaeological survey of the Old Hall. Also discusses Tatton's association with the Massy and Brereton families.
