Abstract:
A watching brief was carried out by Wessex Archaeology during groundworks associated with the Armoury Room Project. The earliest evidence of human activity consisted of three sherds of residual Roman pottery found in post-medieval contexts. A series of rectangular quarry pits cut into the natural brick earth and gravel were dated to the medieval period by finds recovered from the primary silts. The pits were later used as rubbish pits and contained pottery of 16th - 17th century date. The subsequent archaeological sequence was characterised by a series of dumps and levelling deposits which sealed the quarry pits. These deposits, also dated to the 16th - 17th centuries, contained much ash and coal, almost certainly derived from the raking out of domestic fires, domestic refuse and building rubble. Evidence of iron-working was recovered but no associated structures were found. No human remains were found and it would appear that the former Bunhill burial gound did not extend into the site. Few structural remains were encountered; those observed include the remains of a 19th-century brick cess pit or soakaway, several brick walls, a capped well and two brick lined culverts.
