Abstract: |
Wessex Archaeology carried out an evaluation to meet a condition attached to planning permission for residential redevelopment. A trench was excavated in the western part of the site, in which were recorded intercut and discrete post-medieval (17th-18th century) pits. The pits, which cut an estuarine clay deposit overlying natural gravel, were either in an area of open ground or in the backyards of properties fronting the surrounding roads. The remains of a brick-built cellar, thought to have belonged to the Queen's Hotel, were recorded in the north-east corner of the trench. |
