Abstract:
As part of a conservation management plan for proposed development and enhancement to Ford Park, which is used as a community centre, a desk-based assessment was compiled. Ford Park House occupier the site of an earlier house called Hoad Style, which is recorded in the parish registers from the end of the 16th century. It was replaced by a gentlemans 'cottage orne' in the early 19th century, known as Hoad Style Cottage or Hoad Cottage. This house was occupied by a succession of local businessmen, including Woodburn Postlethwaite, a solicitor, who was connected to various properties around Ulverston in the 1830s-1840s. The house was acquired by Montague Ainslie in 1859 for his son William, a wealthy iron master, and it appears that they constructed the present house in 1860 and gave it the name Ford House. It is likely that it was built by George Webster, who was certainly connected to the site during its ownership by Postlethwaite. The site was sold on in 1875 and passed through a sucession of families until being requisitioned by the military during World War II, and much of the associated land was sold off for development. It was later used as part of the school before being preserved for the community in 1998.
