Abstract:
Prior to the demolition of a group of buildings at Davey's Yard, Salthouse Road, Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, a request was made for an archaeological building recording to be carried out. The site was situated on the edge of the hamlet of Salthouse and the original village of Barrow, both of which have at least medieval origins and were associated with Furness Abbey. The area around Davey's Yard however was not developed until the middle of the 19th century, when it became the of site of the Barrow terminus railway station in 1846, which was accompanied by the construction of an engine shed, smith's shop, and workers cottages. The building recording revealed six phases of construction and development at the site starting in the mid 19th century. By examining the existing cartographic evidence and photographs taken of the site many of the phases of construction could be dated to within a few years. The block of buildings occupied by the Furness Railway Company at Davey's Yard continued to expand during the early part of the 20th century but had fallen out of use by 1939 (if not before). The buildings were eventually sold to Roberts, Davy and Co and many were demolished in the latter part of the 20th century, leaving the current boundary wall. The remaining buildings were used as garages. This survey records the extent and condition of the remaining buildings on site prior to their demolition.
