Abstract: |
An archaeological excavation was carried out on land at Tofts Road, Barton Upon Humber in advance of a proposed housing development. The works were commissioned by Scott Wilson for Redrow Homes (Yorkshire) Ltd and conducted in accordance with a specification provided by Scott Wilson (Appendix 1). The site lies in an area of archaeological potential; a geophysical survey revealed possible archaeological remains within the proposed area of development. Further evaluation revealed a number of features within one of the trenches excavated in the northeastern area of the site, Iron Age / Romano British artefacts were recovered suggesting likely settlement or agricultural activity dating to this period. During the course of this excavation, which was targeted on deposits identified during the prior evaluation, a number of archaeological features and deposits were identified. These consisted of an Iron Age ring ditch with contemporary internal features, an associated occupation horizon, a number of undated linear ditches and gulleys, and colluvial deposits filling a dry valley running approximately east-west across the excavation area. |
