Abstract:
Two phases of archaeological works were conducted prior to the construction of the A66 Temple Sowerby Bypass at Winderwath. The route lies to the south of the current A66 and covers a 4.9km length from Whinfell House (NY 589 287), to Lowmoor Row (NY 625 260); crossing the River Eden. Phase 1 included a topographic survey; an evaluation; and a watching brief of geotechnical pits. The topographic survey revealed the remains of a rectangular structure composed of earthfast boulders. Fourteen of the evaluation trenches contained field boundary ditches. Further trenches contained ridge and furrow ploughing, a possible cobble bank/cairn; a cobble wall and underlying ditch; and a cobbled surface. Despite the paucity of dating material, the position and alignment of the ditches uncovered indicated that they were the remains of boundaries associated with the enclosure of the medieval open fields. No archaeological remains were encountered in the 70 geotechnical pits. Four areas were identified for additional works during Phase 2. Strip and record Area 1 produced a number of earth-filled features; a lack of finds left them undated. Additionally, an ancient course of the River Eden was identified. Strip and record Area 2 revealed a well-preserved section of the Roman road. A coin of AD 71 was recovered from the topsoil above disturbed cobbling on the northern edge of the road. One watching brief produced two large, intercutting quarry-pits. The second, on the works compound, revealed a number of pits, hollows and postholes; prehistoric pottery was recovered from one of the pits.
