Abstract: |
WAA was commissioned to undertake an archaeological evaluation at Church Bank, Jarrow, South Tyneside. The work is required as the site lies within close proximity to 19th century colliery and terraced domestic buildings that are of potential archaeological interest. The site is also within close proximity to the Scheduled Monuments of the Medieval Village of Jarrow and of the Monastic Site of Jarrow. No archaeological remains of note were observed. Post-medieval pottery and CBM were recovered. Structural remains were observed in the south-western end of the trench that appears to relate to outbuildings of the terraced housing shown on the 1827 Ordnance Survey map. |
