Abstract: |
Drainage works within the churchyard required the excavation of a trench across the site of the demolished chancel, known previously from earthworks and further investigations surrounding the church. The buried remains of the chancel including the north wall, internal stub walls and the floor bedding were found to be well preserved. A previously unknown wall identified immediately west of the nave, indicated an earlier structure on a slightly diffrent alignment to the present church, which may potentially relate to an earlier church. Additionally other walls revealed that the nave previously extended further west. A former buttress at the northeast corner of the nave was also identified. Fragments of brick and tile recovered from demolition deposits surrounding the church reflected the alteration and shortening of All Saints in the 16th century. |
