Abstract: |
Planning Consent for the development of land on the estate of the former Catholic seminary at Blairs required that a standing building survey, historic landscape survey and evaluation be carried out prior to the development. The standing building survey and historic landscape survey were carried out in 2012. A 7% evaluation was carried out on an area of c.31 hectares of housing development land bisected by the South Deeside Road (B9077). The area N of the road extended up to 120m S of the River Dee from c.10 to 20m OD, while the land to the S sloped up to between 50 and 80m OD. On the lower ground to the N there was clear evidence of frequent changes in the river channel and frequent silting and flooding which may account for a lack of evidence for prehistoric activity. The fields to the S of the road have been extensively cultivated from at least the 18th century and while some traces of rig and furrow cultivation were exposed no other archaeological features or finds were evident.
