Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment and walkover undertaken of part of the former Corus steelworks site in Workington in advance of proposed residential development. Development of the site began in 1872 when the Moss Bay Iron and Steel Works was established. The works, and its associated infastructure, continued to occupy the site until 2006, and was the subject to various phases of modernisation. The site walkover established that very little survives as standing structures within the site boundary. The remains of concrete foundations, service runs, a bridge over the railway and a retaining wall were observed, however the whole area was covered in modern demolition debris. it was considered that the impact for archaeological remains to survive was low |
