Abstract:
As the result of conditions placed on the planning permissions for five residential developments on the Hatfield Road Estate, Witham, Essex, the Heritage Network was commissioned by the Orwell Housing Association Limited to undertake a programme of archaeological investigation on sites located at Siward Road, Deford Road, Philip Road, Turstan Road and Christina Road. The Hatfield Road Estate lies on the western edge of the town of Witham and is bounded by open land to the south-west and north-east and by a railway line to the north-west, beyond which are open fields. Excavations in the immediate vicinity have revealed archaeological features of Iron Age, Roman and medieval date. All the development sites were evaluated by trial trenching, but only one, Christina Road, produced archaeological features. A subsequent open area excavation on this site revealed five undated cremations, and a curvi-linear feature which contained pottery sherds dated to the late Bronze/ early Iron Age. Evidence for truncation by deep ploughing, modern services and the construction of the Hatfield Estate on the site was also encountered.
