Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief at Bank Park, Warrington took place in advance of the construction of a new office block on the site. The watching brief was specifically targeted at monitoring the excavation of an area on the eastern side of the site relating to a building identified as a former water management feature. The excavation exposed a group of walls constructed in blocks of copper slag which were the foundations of a 'pump-house' shown on 1890s mapping. However, large sections of the foundations had been destroyed by a modern (about 1980) drainage system and the building's precise form was difficult to identify from the surviving remains. The northern-most extent of the park's original fishpond was also located. No evidence for the building's function survived, though additional historic map evidence suggests that it primarily served as a shelter. |
