Abstract: |
Archaeological trial trenching on land proposed for residential development north of Weir Farm Paddock and Lime Tree Paddock, on the northern edge of Scothern. There is limited physical evidence for early occupation in the Scothern area: an early 4th century coin has been found within the site itself, and the village lies between the Roman villa site at Sudbrooke and an outlying farmstead at Dunholme. Settlement in Scothern originated in the Saxon period. The current site was thought to lie within the area of settlement, but no remains of any great archaeological interest were discovered during the course of this investigation, which suggests the site was part of the agricultural hinterland. |
