Abstract:
Archaeological investigations were undertaken during July/August 2015 by Pre-Construct Archaeology Limited at Albert Road, Darlington, County Durham. The site was of interest archaeologically because it was central to the development of the first public railway in the world. The oldest railway bridge still in use, the Skerne Bridge, lies at the south-eastern corner of the site, and North Road Station and the Goods Shed, both Grade II* are located nearby to the west. A building of uncertain use was located partly within the south-western area of the site in the early-mid 19th century and was demolished by 1898. In the 1880s, the Albert Hill signal box was constructed towards the eastern side of the site which managed the rail traffic into the Darlington Foundry and north onto the Great North Eastern Railway. This was one of several small buildings relating to the railway which survived on the site until the late 20th century. As part of the Planning Condition, a photographic survey was required as well as a scheme of archaeological evaluation trenches to determine the extent of below ground remains. The archaeological features recorded during the archaeological investigation have been placed within four broad phases of activity: the Railway Embankment, 19th century Signal Box, 20th century additions to the signal box and modern activity. Natural geological material was not encountered in either of the trenches.
