Abstract: Border Archaeology was instructed by to carry out a programme of Archaeological Observation of ground works relating to the provision of a new vehicular access to Stapleton Castle Court from the adjacent public highway. The ground works involved the reduction of ground levels to a maximum depth of approximately 0.60m within a narrow field enclosure sloping down from NW-SE and currently laid out to grass, situated to the S of Stapleton Castle Court, approximately 100m E of the Scheduled Ancient Monument of Stapleton Castle. This enclosure originally formed part of a much larger L-shaped field surrounding the castle. Extensive root action was noted within the topsoil and subsoil deposits (particularly towards the SE end of the site) suggestive of orcharding on the site in the post-medieval period. No significant archaeological deposits, features or finds were identified during this programme of archaeological observation.
