Abstract: |
An archaeological field evaluation by trial trenching was undertaken by University of Leicester Archaeological Services for Partner Construction Ltd on land at Sandhills Avenue, Hamilton, Humberstone and Hamilton, Leicester (SK 6319 0723) in advance of the construction of new housing. The site lies in the vicinity of the deserted medieval village of Hamilton in an area than has undergone a series of archaeological work in the past, which has revealed a number of Iron Age and Romano-British sites in the area. The evaluation consisted of 3 trenches excavated across the footprints of new buildings. The trenches were negative for archaeological features, but 2 of the trenches contained the remains of medieval furrows, one of which yielded a prehistoric flint flake. The ground in most places was heavily disturbed and had been previously stripped and used as a compound during the construction of the surrounding houses |
