Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief along the corridor for the new link road connecting Camborne, to Pool to Redruth. This route passes through one of the major mining centres for Cornwall both of tin an copper. Evidence for early prospection, and exploitation of lodes of circa late 17th to early 18th date were recorded in fields near Cornwalls premier mine of Dolcoath, with 19th century stopes being located beneath these. Evidence for underground leats, also connected with Dolcoath were also recorded. Within the Red River Valley evidence for tailings works mostly in the form of settling tanks, rag frames and launders were recorded probably of late 18th to 19th centuries date. Entire tailings complex buried under tailings sand, and later landscaping. The area around Wilson way was heavily disturbed by reclamation of tailings sands that have either removed, or blanketed evidence for mining though a few slight features were recorded. The line of the 1909 railway track into the sidings were found preserved as impessions within the track ballast.
